Patriot's Pen Essay Contest

Reported by allison_harvey@ipsd.org on 9/25/18

Below is contest information for the 2018-19 School Year:

Hello Area School Leaders -
I am the committee chair for the VFW Post 3873 "Patriot's Pen Essay Contest." Every year, we award over $1,000 to students in Naperville schools as part of this contest. Attached to this correspondence is a student entry form and information about the rules and eligibility. Entries are due no later than October 31st.

As an educator myself, I completely understand how little time there is in the school day for students to complete something not directly related to the curriculum. While dedicating time during the school day for students to participate in this contest is ideal, the members of the VFW completely understand this is not always practical. If possible, we kindly ask that you at least make this information available to students that might be interested in participating outside the school day. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help in this process.

As a veteran of a foreign war and retired United States Marine, I can speak for the members of the VFW by stating that youth participation in our democracy is incredibly important. Their participation and voice is important regardless of political view or ideology. The Patriots Pen essay contest is one small way for students to do so.

Either I or another member of the VFW will be more than happy to come to your school to collect the essays or assist in any manner that you request.

Thank you for considering participation and support for this program.

Sincerely,

Hugh Boger
